We Cried Together

At the beginning, we were both crying
Tears of loneliness hidden behind popularity's eyes
Both of us living in the same desolate world
Two souls trying to unite and weave together
In the midst of tangled webs of gossip
 And long-tied knots of doubt

The first time we said "I love you"
 we cried together again
Content to push out the rest of the world
as our relationship closed in around us
Gripping, tightening, squeezing the very breath out
 of my still-untrained lungs
Allowing the essence of you to fill my lungs with fresh air
 and reset my breathing pattern

In the end, we cried together, yet apart
 Mine stinging tears of guilt
Your burning tears of jealousy and rage
Two years of togetherness
torn to pieces by one minute of deceit
What else can I do besides apologize
 and hand you a tissue?
