A short tale

Once upon a time,
tears burned at the lovers' separation
they knew their times together were short.

They took stolen moments and shook
their fists at the sky.

They defied the onlooking deities.
Dared them to cleave between
passion-filled hearts.

The two fought and conquered.
The reward the promise of
loving together always.

Yet, heard in tales was the
threat of familiarity,
the calamity of the routine.

So, they bolted the doors against
the mundane. Protected against
a thief creeping for love's treasure.

No, the battle continues on.
Love was too hard-fought
to let it slip away like
toothpaste down the bathroom sink.
