Hazy Days

Sitting in my long dress and shoes I wait for you
I watch the days go by
Waiting and staring at the clouds
I watch the road less traveled
And wonder why
I can't hold you in my arms tonight.
I sit and watch the grass grow greener on the other side
While I pull bobby pins from my hair
And tears from my eyes.
Every now and then I'll look up
Through a blurr in the heat
Or a shadow on the trail I see you.
For an instant I rise to my feet
Watch the rainbows fall to the earth and shatter
Their spectacular color around me
And yet the puddles are still dark.

All around me, their eyes taunt their happiness
And the weight on their shoulders
Pulls the rain from the clouds up above.
A moment of sun leaves me
Bewildered among the crowd.
White satined soles rise from the cement
To dance with my dreams
In a ghosted cover of false protection.
And still I wait
With sorrowed eyes
Wind blown hair, and patterned dress.
