Afar

Stomp! Stomp!

I watch as she shoved your heart farther into the watery mud with her heel. It's painful just to watch.

As she stalks away without looking back, I sit in the shadowed corner and hesitate. It's not MY place to interfere. But I take another look at the corner of your heart barely protruding from the slop and rethink.

I creep over to the scene and bend over the bruised organ. Painstakingly, I push away the muck and water it's imprisoned in and lift it free. A spot on one corner catches my eye.

There is a small section that looks like it doesn't belong there. It's the piece of my heart that I can't get back. It's the tiny part that will always make me crawl over and try to pick your heart out of the mud. I don't want you to hurt.
