Madness

The madman
looked intensely
at his next victim
and grinned.
The victim stared back
and grimaced
pondering an escape
but trapped,
a reflection
in the glass
of his own madness.

The madman had loved passionately
the victim had loved passionately
the madman had lost tragically
the victim had lost tragically
the madman had won in the end
the victim had lost
again and again
they were so much alike
the victim
and the madman.

The madman stared
intensely at the victim
his reflection
in the glass
and pondered
his own escape
as the victim
grimaced and stared back
empathetically
at the madman
for the victim
was a victim
of his own madness
again.

One would rise
to the heavens above
the other destined
to burn in hell
the madman
and his next victim
stared intensely at each other
through the glass
and waited
each for the other
to escape the frozen impasse
of loving and losing
and loving and losing
and loving and losing
again and again and again....
