My 'Deli'cate Soul

inside a little little heart
stood a little little man
cradling my soul with his little little hand
often my soul
swelled
and leapt
fearlessly in the air
and
ever patiently holding it down
the little man was always there

now look
look inside my heart
do you see the little man
what do you think he is holding
in his little little hand
a ham sandwich
yes
a ham sandwich
and a confused look upon his face
where went my soul he so dutifully embraced

it is gone
said the little man as he munched the tasty snack
it is gone
repeated the man
and i doubt it's coming back
"YOU LOST MY SOUL" i screamed
my anger deftly fanned
oh no
replied the soul keeper
brushing bread crumbs from his hand

your soul desired freedom
searching for what i could not have known
and my little hand could hold it safe
if from your heart it did not roam
but
another hand reached over
and gently brushed your heart
and the walls of your souls fortress
simply fell apart
your soul looked up and smiled
i had no choice but to set it free
for in my little hand
your precious soul did not want to be

this is your fault pretty girl
YOU
you placed your soul
in that other little hand
and He that took your soul
loves you in a way i had not planned
He loves you more than i
He will not need to hold you in
because now your soul roams freely
where it always should have been

Don't be scared sweet girl
said the little man as he turned to leave
follow your soul
give Him your heart
and your body to him do cleave
oh
and there is just one last thing
said the little man as i wiped a tear from his little face
when you gave His hand your soul
why did you give me a ham sandwich in its place?
