May I See You Again?

     Twenty years ago,
     you waited in your car
     with a half dozen roses
     watching the street
to catch me on my way home.

     We made a life,
     have a life,
     and I only ever see
     that grin, those eyes
and hunger still for your arms and regard.

     But that man---
the one who waited and watched for me...
He hasn't been around much lately,
     and I'm hoping I haven't lost him.
     He loved my jokes,
     praised my wit,
     bathed in my spirit,
and was certain that no lover
     could have been more perfect.

These days I wonder if you ever see her---
the girl who was struck speechless
     by the roses, the waiting,
the lover that was worth all the fuss and wooing.
     So please---
that guy who thought I was the absolute limit---
     May I see him again...soon?
