quizzical

another midnight hour
noticing her shuffling at his glances
neither knows
the closeness
of another new romance
left to the wind for now
to scatter ashes as they scatter sparks
and many kind remarks
about the purpose and the plans
the dreaming of the dreams at hand
by lovers living sheltered lives
straining through their dusty mirrors
cutting with their rusty knives
dancing secrets cheek to cheek
each denying whom they seek
is resting beneath clumsy feet
each one turning first away
then back to look
just to make sure
that nothing has been obscured
by their own cloudy days
or sacred haze with with they forge companions
out of fear
something for when nothing's near
it's common ground
never sought, but always found
a reoccurring player from a long forgotten play
it is dismay
mixed with disregard
folding while they hold the cards
each one flushed out
straight up pushed out
pay up quick
and rush to get out
jack and jill with pails tumbling
each one sees the other mumbling
many moonlit moments spent in other company
they smile and part
each share part of the other's heart
and each too proud to see monopoly
just what will be?
