treading

the last rays of the setting sun are reaching through my door
i know i'm wanting now just solitude, and needing something more
who's to say which way this river's twisting?
searching, weaving, still persisting
winding onward, anchors drifting
closer to the shore

you, my lover, lost at sea...a mermaid in her element
your pool of tears cast waves at me
and make drowning much more relevant
you are free, but you are sorry
you don't dig the calamari
and i can't outswim the light your starry
eyes claim to repent

daggers dug into my sides as i'm trying my best to stear for home
i must admit, i meant to drift, but, not drift alone
i see you clenching strands of pearls
the best friends of the seaside girls
i dunk my head into your world
but, the water tends to chill my bones

you never did have a sirens voice...i never did have much to say
guess i should have known i'd pay the price
when your seaweed virtues washed away
we both are still afloat
even fortresses must have a moat
we might hold each other's antidotes
for the poisoned waters we have sprayed
