attempt

the pale moon rose up from the depths of the night
two lovers were walking hand in hand down the road
they talked to themselves, how their love seemed so right
they wondered to themselves how it all would unfold

but it was dark, and the moon held it's glow
a little to dim to light up the path
uncertainty settled along the fence row
the time spent together was time that would pass

and darkness triggered the shadows of doubt
young lovers spun headlong in dreams of desire
the bounty of with and the lack of without
the dangers of lying too close to the fire

they walked on, unaware of the night
focused on treasures each hoping to find
a few steps behind them an owl took flight
spreading it's wings, in tune with the time

it was dark, the silence complete
the warmth of their hands had gone with the wind
each one afraid of the chance of defeat
each one regretting the signs of the end

it was about holding on, no matter how long
no matter how certain the feelings had changed
holding the last note of their love song
not letting a period fall on their page

when the walk finally ended, they parted as friends
they never looked back, never wanted to
never believed in the means to an end
admitted that ending was the right thing to do
