bars

you were out making friends and a lover or two
the cold winter nights were blankets for me
i was all alone, writing poems for you
writing out dreams that were never to be

i saw you there, on a pedestal high
one that i made sure to place you upon
it wasn't quite fair, but i'll never deny
love doesn't die, even after it's gone

when you looked for yourself, i gave you a mirror
when you came to a bridge, i helped you to cross
now in full light, i see me so clear
the streams of my tears testify to my loss

i will always wonder what exactly you meant
what drove you away, just what i did wrong
i cannot respond to the letter you sent
that page formed a cage, that cage formed this song

it was a darkness of friends, a mutiny of my soul
how everything peaceful just turned into fire
you still say you love me, in hopes of control
you still say you love me, i say you're a liar
