Be Careful What You Wish For

Being alone is not quite
as comfortable as it used to be, is it?
You basked in your solitude
in the early days.
Sprawled sideways across your bed,
Like a rookie ball player
trying to tag all four bases at once.
You relished every precious
moment by yourself.
When I begged for time together,
you claimed to “need your space”,
time for yourself, or time with the guys.
The only time you needed me
was at night, as you drew me near
and held me in your arms ‘till morning.
What empty spaces did I fill
in your dreams that I could not enter
in your waking hours?
And how much satisfaction
do you feel now
as you reach across the bed,
and find me gone?
