Insufficient

you were always staring at me
    studying me
telling me I looked better
    than Hawaii
telling me I was beautiful
telling me I looked like a
    "little queen"
like Elizabeth Taylor
   as Cleopatra
sure enough
you were entranced
weren't faking it
when you told me
I cast a spell
   on you
like no one else
and you let me tell you
   to go to hell
in front of
your brother
and then you bought
me lunch at a
Mexican restaurant
  even though
everybody else
had just eaten breakfast
and you took me
to see "Runaway Bride"
even though you knew
it would suck
and Paul wanted to see
"Sixth Sense"
and you watched
"Sid and Nancy" for me
(Paul was bored)
(but you understood)
and you bought me gifts
and you let me cry
and you let me smoke
a pack of menthols
at IHOP at four o'clock
in the morning
and chatter incessantly
about Dorothy Parker
and John Belushi
and Europe
and childhood memories
you met my family
  for me
you fixed my toilet
  for me
you introduced me to
  "Twin Peaks"
and They Might Be Giants
and "South Park"
you showed me your Korea pictures
confessed your dalliances
  with prostitutes
(you felt guilty about it)
(and hated them)
('cause they were too clinical)
(you like to cuddle)
you went to Stonehenge II with me
and together we watched
the space shuttle
streak across the sky
later on you obeyed me
when I screamed
NO TV!!!! Come to bed!!!!
and that was when I first
realized you reminded me
of a turtle
and that was when you told me
about the guy in college
who tried to seduce you
and I wanted to kiss
that hurt away
and make you whole
I wanted to hand you
your innocence
wrapped up in gold
but you
had to end
   things
because you
    wanted
      more...
