So True

a friend of mine was right
love came to me when I was
napping on the clock
dreaming of enigmatic tigers
and Scottish castles

before
love had always been a nuisance
a pesky kid sister
at seven o'clock on a Saturday morning
yelling,"The Smurfs are on!"
love was easily dismissed
with a hurtled pillow
and choice expletives

but the love that awoke me from a long winter's nap
caught me
too sleepy to protest
taught me
to look out the window
and see the sunbeams making the snowman cry
and I
had no choice
but to throw off the covers
and stretch my arms up
and say,"I prefer French toast...with powdered sugar and lotsa
maple syrup. And, oh! A glass of frosty skim milk that hasn't
expired."
