Fleeting Doubts

I sit on the steps,
the chill from the cement
seeping through the thin
cloth of my sweats,
momentarily lost in thought.

Pictures of you
run through my mind
as I gaze at the
remnants of the setting sun.
The thin curl of smoke
from the Marlboro hanging
loosely in my grasp goes
unnoticed as I wonder
what visions your sky holds.

Our days spent fishing
flash as bright colors
before my eyes, the laughter
we shared a welcome song
to soothe my lonely heart.

The pinks and purples fade
as I take one last drag,
and wonder if this love
can end with anything but pain.
