Resisting the Falling

They call it falling in love because it is just that-- falling. It's like you've been holding your breath and when you meet him, you finally let it out and slump back against the wall. But the thing about falling is that once you've fallen, it's hard to get back to where you were. You're drawn back to him like a magnet so that even if you're officially out of love, you are still falling into love, or rather, back to it. And so here I realized that the only way to keep from falling is to fill in the hole. I unplugged the phone, I took down the pictures, I pushed away my feelings. But my heart still reminds me that he's here, in everything I do and sing and say. It takes a little more energy and a little more effort because I have the added task of resisting the falling and convincing myself I was right.
