Road Trip

I know I never take you anywhere
You're unhappy staying home all the time
We both need the exercise
And we never just get out and drive
Chasing daylight heading for California weather

You and I have been together so long
You've never let me down before.
Though I can't afford to take care of you.
Like you deserve.
And though I've left you waiting for me in the rain.
But that wasn't my fault I swear it.

We both know you weren't my first love.
There was some conscious decision to "upgrade"
Though I think we're together until death.
Yours or mine would likely be yours and mine.

You take such good care of me.
Though you were shaking when we started out so fast.
And you shake every time we slow down.
I try to steady us both.

It scares me when they threaten you
It scares me that I can't spend all my time protecting you.
It scares me that my infinite care
Could not save you from the nicks and scratches you get

As we break seventy-five heading toward the mountains of East Washington.

I do love my car. And almost empty highways.
