Seen Through a Tear

we said goodbye at the terminal

i left with tears in my eyes
not just tears
but heart and gut wrenching tears
in drops so huge i could hear them
as they PLOPPED on my tight, black linen skirt
tears so plump they obscured my view
like coke-bottle glasses
and re-created you for me
temporarily

in my moment of total confusion
i could see you sitting across from me
in the car
your gorgeous face looking into mine
with such tenderness and love
i damn near wrecked
i loved you so much
i love you so much
so i pulled off the road
and leaned close to you

i reached out to touch your arm
but my hand went right through it
i tried to kiss your lips
but i couldn't do it
i screamed out your name
a thousand times to get to you
but you couldn't hear me
my voice rang through you

i looked away, not wanting to bear this moment of reality

you were fading away with the tear in my eye
you were rolling right down my cheek
onto my thigh
leaving me all over again
it is so hard saying goodbye

when i looked back,
there was nothing left of you,
but waves like you see above a blacktop in July
my tears and memories of you
played a cruel trick on me
you really were gone

your image just transposed
by a tear
