Sudsy

sitting here in this plastic chair
eating a Snickers bar and reading Love's Frantic Flight
while my clothes spin in the washing machine
I don't think of the words I'm reading
or the loud Hispanic kids begging their mama for quarters
for the little toys in plastic bubbles machine
I don't even think of all the checks of mine that
are bouncing from Shreveport to Lordsburg
and the electricity that will be shut off soon
and the Eskimo Pies that will melt in the freezer
and the way my feet will protest as they pound the pavement
while I search for another job that will pay me just enough
to keep me alive

I think weird thoughts
thoughts of the suds in the machine
and how I wish I was like the clothes that are spinning
how I wish with a couple of quarters all the dirt and germs
could be washed away
making me smell sweeter
than a spring day in Arkansas

then maybe you would inhale me
and never want to stop
