If I Should Cry Before I Wake....

You wonder how it is
that I do not sleep---
brain turning and churning
like a dervish.
I get four hours---
three
and stumble out of bed
and start all over
everyday.
Sleep was sweet
because the waking was sweet.
Now I face cross examination,
contempt
anger
and you saying
you started this---
why the hell don't you get some sleep?
I thought of it this morning
over the coffee you called bitter
that tasted fine to me.
If I close my eyes
it brings me closer
to morning
and each morning
pushes me farther from you.
I know I will wake one day
and find my pillow damp
with tears
I was too damned tired
to release by day.
If I should cry before I wake,
then who will be left
my heart to take?
