Windows (94 and 2000)

Landing shuttles in Windows (94 and 2000)

Landing shuttles in Windows (94 and 2000)

They say that when landing a shuttle
you have a window of just a few minutes.
I believe that love and relationships
    are exactly the same way
Successfully landing is like steering a giant brick
    Through a drinking straw.
Too often we miss our chances
try to take the window after it is already gone
or take the wrong way down
    To crash and burn
Too often we try to get in line
and by the time we're out in front
we've forgotten to take our turn.
And it doesn’t help
    To moan and whine
    To question and doubt
You gotta read the dial just right
And climb through that upstairs bedroom window when it’s open
Or pass on it gracefully when you’re sorry now
    And it’s too late
And anyway she was hell to get along with
And though we can all be tragic
And though we all want a happy ending
    It doesn’t end there.
    It takes more than love.
    It also takes timing.
    And work.
    And luck.
And sometimes
when you missed the window after the first time
there is no window there at all anymore
no window for a second time
because the weather changed and she found someone else
    who is everything she wanted
    everything she needs
everything inside that she wishes she could be
    someone
    who means everything
    to her
And sometimes
Even though you weren’t really sure
    You would take the window
    if it was open
    Even though you were
    just looking in that direction
    In a random glance
    on the off chance
that you’d find the right window
and you kinda, sorta, somewhat-do, alright-I-admit-it wish
    Yes -- wish
    it were open anyway
And sometimes
    It’s alright
    Because there are other windows
    Other places to land
    And you can be happy
    That she landed
    Safe and sound
    And smiling
    When she says
    I do.
    Not to you.
It’s alright
    As long as you
Are not so busy looking out a window
    Watching her eyes
    Watching things go by outside
    Out the window
    Of a train
It’s alright
    As long as you
    Are not so busy
    Watching a window you missed
    That you miss
    Another window
    Another life
    Another absolutely beautiful
    When she smiles

She helped me write this -- without helping me write this -- by giving me good music. My first muse. If you like this poem listen to these artists: Jude. Vertical Horizon. Lemonheads. Nine days.
