etched

we were standing the rain
i was smoking
but my cigarette was soaking
so i threw it on the ground
put my arm around her waste and said
"i'll love you 'til the day i'm dead"
she smiled at me and shook her head
she knew i was a fool

we were entwined in the night
we were glowing
both were seeing, both were showing
like we dreamt that it would be
she nestled close and looked at me
i'd felt at once that destiny
had let her love come rest with me
i knew i was lucky

we were engaged in the moments
we were happy
but life somehow came a-rapping
and tore that dream apart
i put my lips to her photograph
i know it hurts, but i have to laugh
i'll write in my epitaph:
"i know that i have loved"
