SCENE 48

SCENE 48-INT.-Louie Louie's. Night.
Papaw is onstage.
Papaw: I dedicate this song to the memory
of my best friend and truest, brightest
angel. Since she's not here, I'll sing to
the sweet girl who brought me here.
Close-up of Becca. She has tears in her eyes.
Derek puts his arm around her and kisses the
top of her head.
Papaw sings "Candy" by Johnny Mercer and Jo
Stafford. While he sings, camera pans the
audience. Everyone is apparently amazed to see
an old man in a cowboy hat and t-shirt that says
If I Promise to Miss You Will You Go Away? belting
out an old, sentimental love song like he was the
one who wrote it. Becca smiles and places her
hand on her heart. Derek downs his shots and swigs
his mug of beer.
Close-up of Papaw. He looks at Becca as he sings.
When he finishes, people clap and cheer wildly.
Becca stands up and claps. Papaw looks around.
Decides he likes being in the spotlight.
Papaw: That was our song. First song we ever made
love to. We were together forty-four years, and we
were still honeymoonin' right up until the very end.
Deejay: Thank you, Carl. That was lovely.
Papaw: Hold your britches. I'm not done yet. Who
wants to hear a joke? There was this guy named Charlie.
One day he said to his co-worker,"Y'know, I've heard
that only really smart people keep alligators for
pets." His co-worker, a fella by the name of Ralph,
said,"That's right. Why, I have a pet alligator myself."
"Hmmmm," said Charlie."So much for that theory."
The audience laughs politely and claps.
Close-up of Becca. She's laughing so hard that she
spews beer. Derek is shaking his head. Hands her
a napkin.
Papaw: Thank you. I love you all, good-night.
Papaw bows and walks back to the table.
Deejay: Wasn't that great? There should be more Carls
in this world. What a tough act to follow. Becca, you're
up. Come on, girl. Show us what ya got.
Papaw sits down at the table. Becca kisses his cheek.
Becca: You brought tears to my eyes.
Papaw: Somehow, I knew that would be the case.
Derek: Knock 'em dead, tiger.
Becca growls at Derek. Bites his neck.
Gets up from the table and walks up the steps
to the stage. Guys start whistling and cheering.
Deejay: Look at you. You haven't even started singing
yet and they're goin' crazy!
Becca smiles and shrugs. Grabs the microphone. Sings
"In the Flesh" by Blondie. Winks at Derek.
Close-up of Derek. He's blushing.
Close-up of Papaw. He's nodding his head in approval.
Close-up of Becca. She's smiling and staring at Derek
as she sings.
When she finishes the song, people cheer and whistle and
clap. Becca returns to the table. Derek reaches for her
hand. Kisses it.
Papaw: You put Judy Garland to shame. You're a star!
Becca: Think I should quit my day job?
Papaw: Now, don't go overboard. Fame is a wily coyote.
Deejay: Derek, you're up.
Derek: Shit.
Becca: Just look at me. You'll do great.
Becca gives Derek a kiss. He jumps up from the table
and bounds up the steps. A female voice in the audience
cries out,"Damn! It's Sugar Ray!"
Derek hears the comment and glowers.
Derek: Bite your tongue. Sugar Ray my ass.
Begins to sing "Here, There and Everywhere" by the
Beatles. Looks at Becca as he sings.
Close-up of Becca. She looks dazed.
Sips her mug of beer. Smiles.
