Cover Me

I remember
  The night that
The cops came
And you held me
On the side of the house
  Pinned up against the shingles
Hiding...
  You were still on probation
  Yet, you covered me
     Talked to me
     Calmed me down
I stared at the moon
And how the color of the
Midnight sky reminded me
Of how I was feeling just then
I was scared...
I was drunk...
I didn't know what was going on
It was cold
  You were cold
     You were scared
Yet, you covered me
  I stared at the people
Some hopped the fence
  Some mulled around
Shushing others
In hopes not to be found
I just stood there
  And held on
     Breathing... your courage
     Listening... to your voice
     Trusting... you
Through the night
  Your body warmed me
Your hot breath on
   My neck
Kept me awake
     I was still drunk
     I was still scared
When I saw it
  There in your eyes
Was my sanctuary
