Lunch Break

A friend at work
tells me
not to fall in love.
Currently divorcing her
once-in-a-lifetime
one-and-only,
she knows
a little something
about all this...
"Keep it simple,"
she advises,
"stick to movies and
dinner and
making out.
But don't fall in love.
Anything
but that."
She knows
it's too late,
though.
It shows--
the tired eyes,
the faraway
look when
we're on lunch break
and I'm smoking the
unfiltered Camels
I never gave
a thought to before.
She knows this
and she feels really bad
for me.
I can tell.
