Miss Fortune

I should have noticed something amiss
The night we lay on the couch
Till the sun come up
You'd never seen the sunrise
and neither had I
And you pronounced it essential that we not go another day
without experiencing the rose gold blessings from the east
I should have heard a warning
In compliments doled out generously
while you brushed my hair
and noticed how my eyes changed colors
as I grew sleepy
and seconds from nodding off
You decided they were the precise shade of a stormy sea
You turned my head
Because no one had ever noticed me like that
And enveloped in cashmere and some delicious sent from Armani
I predicted that you were someone rare and special
And you giggled and sang me old James Taylor songs
and Diva-worthy renditions of Diana Ross hits
And we planned our respective weddings
And named babies
And planned my Miss America pageant debut
Me as "Miss Fortune"
Every day I see you I reflect on the night I moved you up
to a status near God
And how quickly you fell the day you told me you were in love with him.
