It's the dreams that break me

I could say I've been doing fine since you left
after all...I have a job with a salary and benefits
and friends to get drunk with and girls to call
my life is in running order
my demons have been placated
they don't screech much anymore
or keep me up at all hours of the night
it's the dreams that break me
and take me somewhere I don't want to go
I know you were never that perfect that soft that sweet that good
but in the neighborhood of my REM you are all I ever wanted
and needed and so much more
my trembling whore with gossamer faerie wings
and the rings I bought you glitter on your fingers
reminding me how far we could've taken forever
if only I had been more clever
more attentive more patient more into you at the time
I'm fine
I don't miss you
it's the dreams
that break me
