Officer And Gentleman

Oh, you are a Gentle Man,
and an officer to your soul---
and now you've hung your wings
in a shadowbox over the desk,
closed the book on the life
that took you from boy to man,
and wait for a new episode
with anxious eyes
you try to hide from me.
Brave doesn't make you a hero love---
There can be no courage
without fear,
you taught me that gently
when I was too afraid to fly,
too afraid to fall
and certain of failure.
You brought me out of myself,
and into your world
baby steps, faltering---unsure.
But your arms around me
were firm, and warm,
your heart was patient,
and your soul held mine
even when I twisted in your arms,
longing but frightened.
You gave me love
and asked nothing---
not once.
And now you are standing
at the edge of uncertainty,
and I must find a way
to gentle your fears,
calm your heart
and make you see
that the world will always
have a place for you,
even as you set aside the world you knew.
I know your courage.
I know your value.
And you needen't fear the unknown
after all you have done
with your splendid life.
Officer. Gentleman. Lover. Friend.
oh yes---and a hero.
In my eyes,
in my heart,
ever and always...a hero.
