preservation

friendship a word
nothing more
than less
of who we summed each other
up to be when we were not
circumscribed in relating
to one another
and our hearts needed no translation
but now here at this party
to see you no longer
hurts as it once did
when the memory of
such wounding was fresh and
bled freely onto the sheets
I once slept on alone
you seem happy now
amongst nominal friends and
a more suitable lover
and I am almost glad again
to see you and not
feel awkward
