seasoned greeting

exchange vows of "hello, how are you?"
the links in the chain
the rusted one that remains
seeming to break
but it's folly is fake
and it's tension is taut
which is not what you thought
when you first let it fall from your view

sleeping on a mattress of nails
cupped hand catching a cough
turn the light off
stare into the black
lift the yoke from your back
prop up your head
discard things that were said
and stitch up a new set of sails

"hello, darling, how have you been?"
imagine a dream
a new tear at the seams
more mending to do
another hole in your shoe
another secret defined
another sign of the times
a backwater rush
a stroke of the brush
and you might never be here again
