Treading Water
You had time for me then
As if you knew
There wasn't much time left for us.
We watched the fish
Circle the dock slowly
We could see them clearly -
Sunfish and some bass
Sliding through water
Moving below
A deceptively calm surface.
You whispered to me -
"Fish have the ability
To breathe underwater."
"Yes" I answered.
"They come by it honestly."
