Asking For Angels

Tonight when the quiet falls,
and the only sound is the rain,
I will being asking for angels, my love,
and hoping that God is inclined to listen.
Oh, it is a selfish prayer---
and I do not dare ask this,
without being willing to admit
that it is as much for me, as you.

I will be there---
but if I am to be brave,
I must know that there is better than I beside you.
So I will be asking for angels
to cool the stifling heat,
to gentle your spirit,
and whisper softly
that you have naught to fear.

I will be asking for angels
from the bottom of my heart,
and asking to be forgiven
for being so rash as to think
that my love is the coin
that heaven will take
to keep you safe from harm.
