Case In Point

Two days of fond looks
warm words,
and even the occasional brush
made me focus sharply on you.
This was what had been,
all those years ago
when being together was simple
and there wasn't a trouble in the world
we couldn't banish with a kiss.
Within hours of our return
you are back to banging things
for emphasis,
cold looks
angry stares
and you take a moment
to scribble a note
that says anything
but I love you.
You say it's stress,
not us.
But the stress ain't going away dear---
and we seem to be sliding further away
everytime I look.
You said happy birthday
and it sounded too much
like goodbye.
