Thank You, Oh Hero

Everyday people leading everyday lives
But have you ever stopped a moment and looked close in their eyes
For hidden deep within a soul or two you’ll find
A hero living there, keeping watch, biding time.

It might be a sailor
On a ship called USS Cole
Who lost his life in a senseless act of terror
Keeping freedom priceless like many heroes of old.

But it could be the Doctor
Airlifted to ease part of the pain
Or even the physicist called on
To diagnose danger’s bane

But I tell myself I must never forget
The man who smiled, the lady who spoke
Both have within their own hearts
A hero who has not yet awoke

What is a hero, is it the person or the act
And who do I tell “Thank You"
For the courage you chose, without holding back
Everyday people, everyday lives
But take just a minute from your busy day with me
And say that “Thank You” to every hero we see.
