Second Thoughts

Funny how she fumbling found

her lips in search of mine

when just before

She'd closed the door

to walk away this time.

Funny how her fingers fought

to pull that shirt away

and aching belly crushed to mine

to kiss, and rock and sway.

Funny how she'd secret sought

where greener pastures grow

and in her mind

left me behind

deciding now to go.

Funny how she'd sighed and wept

with cried out her release

to love me long until she slept

satisfied, at peace.

Funny, after 2 AM

I found an open drawer

in the cabinet I kept

beside my own front door.

There lay the letter

You once wrote

to say you'd always care

and underneath, the braided wreath

the locket of your hair.

And on her finger tips last night

what was that scent I knew?

If memory had served me right

perfume I'd given you.

Funny how you care for me

long after you have gone

Your ghost has saved my heart again

that gentle perfume on the wind

Because of you, this trace of you,

Our love continues on.
