Square Dance

partners were picked and it was corny
in junior high
Goddard Junior High
in Midland, Texas
"trailer for sale or rent"
but I was way high on estrogen
it flowed through me
even though it wasn't evident
in my flat chested scrawny body
and there was no charm to my
shy silver braces smile
but the boys had no choice
everyone got a partner
and there were never enough cheerleaders
and C cups to go around

I found glamor years later
it wasn't graceful, actually
I clamored for it
cat on a tin roof in Texas in July like
I grabbed a mike and sang my song
I danced in the spotlight
so white and shameless
drunk on Long Island Ice Tea
I was free and overripe
I burned and yearned for lessons learned
with the lights down
any clown would do
as long as he knew his cue

finally I've been picked
and not at random and not with a casual
She'll Do
I'm married
mated
settled
paired off
like the animals in Noah's zoo
but blue notes stream from the door down the alley
and Frankie Valli still insists
that "Grease is the word"
...I'll never be Sandy.
