Marriage Promise

A river streams through
Long nights at summer's end
When a forest bed sufficed
To call down heaven's breath
And the cool air caressed
That glimpse of happiness.
There I brought you close, my dear,
To a table set in gold
Lighted with a glow that does not dim
As the elegance of summer fades.

A river flows ever deeper and
Always to its destination;
Above its course we sleep
Having seen that place of destiny
We walked along its shores
Our eyes fixed upon that horizon
Where conviction and sentiment meet
And children choose the color of crayons
For Valentines and birthday invitations.
