Emotional Setback

It's been three months
And you appear, a tiny, blinking red light
On the answering machine - platonic?
Instantly I forgive you for not calling back.

It's been three months
And you pull up in front of my house
- but not in the driveway - never in the driveway -
Instantly I seize my coat and run to meet you.

It's been three months
And you put your arm around me.
Of course, though, we're just friends - absolutely!
Instantly, I want to give you my share of the flu.

It's been three months
And you rub your hand up my neck and through my hair
As we wander through the mall, laughing at trashy clothes.
Instantly, I smile shyly, self-important.

It's been three months
And it's time for me to go home.
We pull up in front of my house, and I don't want to go in.
Instantly, I want to grab onto you and never let go.

It's been three months
And you disappear a tiny red light
Up the hill and through the trees
Slowly, I realize my emotional setback.
