The Emotional Spendthrift

Is there such a creature as an emotional spendthrift?
Would he fit the mold of one such as I,
I who threw away that which was beautiful and prescious
instead preferring that which would break my heart.
Only fools do not appreciate that which they may possess,
and only fools of even greater proportions,
target that which is out of reach and hot to the touch,
and place themselves in the most horrible of situations,
where a running jump will yield no result
other than a painful burn scar and a crash landing.
In the lifelong search for love and beauty,
the man who wins is not he who chases butterflies,
but he who has the patience to dig for gold.
