the villain, gingerbread, and you

this day seems longer than the last
though daylight passes twice as fast
this shroud of darkness where i lie
blocks the view of starlit sky
i focus fully on the black
some birds set free will not fly back
i echo stories to myself
they leap to life from off my shelf
i pick one, random, and dissect
imagination's too direct
something to coax me into sleep
something profound, but not too deep
this vision creeps into my view
the villain, gingerbread, and you

i've no idea from whence it came
but you're not the villain
and i'm not to blame
