Moulin Rouge
I'm breaking my usual tradition of waiting until a move on its last legs commercially before reviewing it.

Moulin Rouge has a bit of a split personality. One personality is a kinetic mix of MTV cutting and Loony Tune pacing, all viewed through the filter of 1900 Paris. The other personality is a traditional romantic musical, but with Lehrman's commitment to the hits of the 70s,80s, 90s, and today.

The first view of the Moulin Rouge is amazing. The mix of the dancers singing that "Voulez Vous" song that's all over the radio these days is set against the finely dressed male patrons singing Cobain's "I feel stupid/ And contagious/ Here we are now/ Entertain us"-- and it really works.

The energy of the first half is amazing, but I felt overall the flick got bogged down in the romance. Then again, I'm not the biggest fan of musicals, so it that should be taken with a grain of salt. The characters were a little bit... I dunno, over-traditional, the young bohemian writer, the dazzling starlet of the show that everyone's in love with.

Overall, I think everyone should see this film, if only because it's interesting and different. The popculture music reference that permeate both the musical selections and the dialog are funny, and visually this is the most amazing film I've seen in years... CGI has never been this much fun.
