Gate 2B

Here I sit watching and waiting with a friend of yours. One I hardly know. He talks about the party he went to last night and how he's decided to clean up. I tell him it sounds like a good idea to me. I start to wonder if you have yet. You hadn't mentioned it for a while, so I silently assumed you did. Right now I'm not so sure. Your friend and I talk about his fiance. He tells me stories about going through security in a Swiss airport when he last visited her. His eyes really shine when he says her name, and then he goes to another place for a few minutes. I figure somewhere with her. I don't want to intrude, so I try to estimate where you are right now. When your friend talks again, he jokes about how uncomfortable the chairs are. We both come to the conclusion that it's better to stand. We walk to the large windows and comment on the skies. Rain clouds suddenly open themselves and throw their contents to the landing strip and its surroundings. A nervous glance is passed around the room. Even the two small children eating Happy Meals quickly lose their appetite. Your stormy eyes come to mind and I turn away from the thought. I notice the tatoo on my companion's ankle as my eyes are casting downward. He tells me he designed it, and he'd gladly take me to get one whenever I wanted. I make a mental note of that and we finally get onto one of my favorite subjects. I tell him how you were my first great heartbreak, you. He tells me you were his first kiss. Your plane finally comes into sight and the tension vanishes from the room. We both smile when we realize you have to walk at least two minutes in the rain. We have a great laugh trying to imagine the gripes we'll hear about it when you step in the room. I notice your unmistakable figure as you step onto the pavement. My eyes water when I recall how much I've missed it the past four months. Your friend asks if I've seen you yet as you round the corner. I stand quietly checking up on you through your eyes. You look so good. Your five o'clock shadow is just beginning to show, but I've always loved that rugged look about you. You smile at me and instead of whining you ask if I'm just going to stand there. You wrap me in your arms and kiss my cheek under a softly glowing "Gate 2B" sign as the rain clouds slowly dim out the rest of the world. I suddenly realize how much I've longed to be in your embrace.
