What The Heart Does Bid

As This Heart Does Bid...

Hard to remember that this heart

carries every mark, shows each smear,

is no pristine work of origami perfection

that sits just so,

and has reason for the quirks and hesitations.

Hard to remember that love carries a steamer trunk,

loaded with momentos, sentiment, out grown dreams, and quiet rage spun of dashed hope tucked with lavendar for memory.

I want to hold you with both arms, something most easily done when the hands are free,

instead of covering the heart

like a child covers a scrape

so no one can make it hurt worse,

but longing for comfort and sweet grace

to take away the wasp sting

of flesh laid raw by indifference.
