butterfly smile

when he first saw her
he knew love
though he could also feel
her disgust
so he tried flowers
to softly woo
found them crumpled
in the gutter, new
candy uneaten
letters returned
yet caught was he
in these throws of love
he fought  truly fought
this feeling
with rationalized thought
to drinking regrets
and for a while he won
till he met her again
two had her cornered
were testing her out
vile and disgusting things
they were raving about
so he walked up
asked for a dime
distracting them long
for her to get away
when they were done
he survived
though he did limp around
for a week or three
then every day he
seemed to meet
she was here, there,
across the street
he fled to be away
yet follow she did
shredding his heart
so much worse than the body
they did
a note of thanks received
he put away
with the rest of the notes
she has sent him
it would never work
was as far as he thought
low of i.q.
offices she worked
he at night cleaned
so he kept the notes
with no reply
and she of the butterfly smile
with the deepest pool, blue eyes
so haunting in his dreams
would always rest in his heart
but as far as his life
he paused with dim thought
it would be best if he not reply
