Parting The Petals

Parting The Petals, an Improv....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
petals of a rose...required word, velvet.

Ah, but it seems you have
always known the secret ways
to this tight budded heart,
closed hard because too much cold,
or too much heat,
too much rain
seemed to blight it.

And it knew that it would never
flare into the crimson velvet beauty
of the sisters who knew more care,
so it forgot for a time
that it was a flower.

And along came a gentle gardener,
less interested in pruning,
or forcing than gently coaxing
the petals,
making them wish to feel the sun,
and trying to teach
one stubborn little bud
to dance on the breeze.

Came the flower---
no, not the rose one might have guessed,
but something hybrid,
strong...and glowing.
It will never be a rose,
never be a velvet queen---
but it is at last,
the bloom it was meant to be,
coaxed by a gentle hand,
and a gentler heart.
