Washing It All Away

gone from your 'can't i have you back?' stage
to the serving of papers in manilla envelopes
(your only alternative, due to my complete
lack of willingness
to take you back)
i was outside washing the shit from the kitty litter pan
when your messenger arrived
i knew straight away who this was
why he was here
and the information he was bearing
he was sweet (good looking too, thank you)
he handed me your final good bye
writ in the language of lawyers
i recieved it with no feelings whatsoever
no, not true
i was curious, and relieved to be
coming into this long awaited
quietly anticipated
moment
i took the envelope and noticed my hand shaking
that kinda pissed me off
that i should have a physical reaction
when there was no negative emotional reaction
the guy stopped to talk to my daughter
because she did what she always does
and happily engages everyone in conversation
did he wonder how you could divorce this
cute little girl, and the quiet boy in the house
and the fantastic, gorgeous woman in the yard
who was cleaning up some shit?
