To My Wife on Christmas - 1944

I got lost on the Mountain Of Remember
And almost perished with thirst
But I found a Fountain of Memory
And drank until I almost burst.

I remember the day when life started --
It was 1920, I think.
The chains that bound me were parted
And I gayly dropped over the brink

Into an Eden of Roses
With an angel to walk by my side.
To share with me life joys and sorrows --
T'was you Dear, My own blushing Bride.

I remember the birds sang so lovely.
I remember the look on your face.
I remember the clothes you were wearing,
A gown with a bodice of lace.

I remember the times, God help me,
When I failed to be true to the trust
You placed in me, and in anger
Said things that were cruel and unjust.

I remember when you went to "The valley
Of the shadow" and brought back our son.
Today he is fighting out yonder
Till the battle of Freedom is won.

All through the years we have shared dear,
Our trials, you've always been true.
My only crowning achievment --
My love is Perfect for you.
