Rain Dance

I am performing ritual purification,
breathing deep the smoke,
stripping for the sweat lodge
and asking the spirits to harken unto me,
though I do not know their names,
when it seems they have guessed mine.
I will call the rains for you my love,
beg Bear, Crow, Raven and Coyote
and stand beneath the vaulted sky
hands outstretched,
fingers reaching,
and offer prayer for what you need.
I will ask the rain to bring the healing,
and though I fear the dark of night,
and dread the place that is alone,
I will go there for your sake,
pushing away the fears
that would stand between us.
I am only the woman you love,
and you are the man
I let into my soul
when the lightning fell
around us like summer rain.
And I do not know that they will grant my prayer,
I only know that when I emerge
I will be a different soul,
and I hope that you can love me still,
when I have danced with the gods.
