Ivory Winter

The sun now sleeps in
and hazy mornings begin
later and later

She retires to the hills
for her nighttime rest
earlier and earlier

Bells and ribbons announce
the season's arrival is
closer and closer

Lights engulf the trees
in quiet small town suburbs
house by house

Littler eyes peer out windows
growing in their restlessness
more and more

Yours the eldest of them
wishing for a white blanket
harder and harder

My own pale hands clasp
asking to be your ivory winter
prayer by prayer
