Life, Love, Marriage, and Washing Cars

Marriage.  The most complicated form of human involvement and interaction.  Everytime I hear the word I think of my parents.  Married for over 40 years, they've been through the worse and the best, stayed in the game when it got rough and still managed to stay in love.  Almost makes me consider getting married.  But then again, I remember my parents.  My dads biggest worries are if the trash has been taken out or not, or if the car is as clean as it should be.  My mothers biggest worries are whether or not she's cooking the right meal for her family to enjoy.

I do not want to attend soccer games.
I do not want to worry about finding a babysitter just so I can go out with my wife for a few hours.
I do not want to change diapers.
I do not want to worry about which room in the house is clean or not.

I've got a life in front of me and I want to make it mine.  Sure, I'm young, and you can say that in time my opinion about marriage will change, but I doubt it.  Whenever I think about settling down I remember one conversation that I had with my dad when I was 16 and I just bought my first car.  It went something like this:

Dad: Have you cleaned the car yet?
Me: No, not yet, I will.
Dad: Do it now!  Clean it.
Me: Don't worry dad I can clean it later.
Dad: No, do it now.
Me: Dad it's just a car, if it isn't clean birds aren't going to suddenly stop flying and blue isn't going to look like red.

And that's when he gave me "that" look.  And for the next hour and half I was treated to one of the most over dramatic speeches about life, love, marriage and how it somehow revolved around washing the car on a regular basis.

So, whenever I think of love I think of my parents.  And whenever I think of marriage I think of cleaning cars.

Don't mention the word "marriage" around me if you wish to have any chance of claiming me as your man.  Just like washing a car....marriage can wait until I'm ready to pick up some soap and water and go through the steps of making something old look new again.

But until then, I'll wash the car later.
